What does “accredited” actually mean?
Accreditation is oversight of the certifier. A certification body is accredited to ISO/IEC 17021-1 by a national accreditation body that signs the IAF multilateral recognition arrangement (IAF MLA, now administered by Global Accreditation Cooperation). That chain, standard to certification body to accreditation body, is what gives a certificate weight across borders.
Why non-accredited certificates get rejected
When a tender specifies ISO, it means accredited ISO. Iraqi government tenders and international oil companies verify supplier certificates before approving a vendor. An unverifiable certificate fails that check, and the bid is set aside on a technicality, no matter how good the work behind it.

How to verify an ISO certificate
Verification is free and takes a minute. Open IAF CertSearch and search the certificate number or the certified company name. A genuine accredited certificate shows the certification body, the accreditation body, the standard, and the status. If nothing appears, treat the certificate as non-accredited.
